HFT / Air Rifle
At Maidenhead Target Shooting Club, we do several disciplines which involve the use of air rifles. One of these disciplines is called HFT (Hunter Field Target). The range at Maidenhead allows for the practice of HFT and general plinking. The club also has a team which travels around the south east during the winter, shooting in the winter league against other clubs.
HFT involves shooting targets at varying distances from 8 yards to 45 yards with a sub 12ft/lbs air rifles. The targets are based on UK air rifle quarry such as rabbits, rats, crows, magpies, and the grey squirrel, there are also other shapes which are available.
These targets are made up of two main areas. The main target called the plate makes up the shape of the target, and contains a hole varying in size from 15mm to 45mm called the killzone. Through the killzone is another plate which when hit will make the target fall flat. The two areas of the target when used in competition allow for different points to be awarded for the area hit while taking your shot, 1 point for the plate, and 2 for the killzone.
All types of air rifles are welcome at the club, and for those who use PCP (pre-charged pneumatic) rifles, the club has filling facilities in the form of 300bar divers bottles. The calibre of airguns shot at the club are either 0.177" or 0.22", the club recommends mainly 0.177" and only stocks 0.177" pellets in the club house, but if you own a 0.22" you are also welcome.
