Benchrest
Benchrest shooting is usually a sport in which match accurate rifles are shot at paper targets from specialist rests on a bench from a sitting position. Here at M.T.S.C. we usually take slightly more relaxed approach to our benchrest shooting.
Instead of having perfect, weighted and adjustable rests we tend to use a mixture of rests. Anything from a bean-filled shooting bag to bi-pods. Some of the more D.I.Y. oriented members make their own intricate rests which are often a talking point.
We have a wide variety of people that shoot benchrest during the week, each with different levels of shooting skill. Most of us do it for pleasure and come for the great social atmosphere that usually prevails amongst the less serious shooters.
That's not to say we don't take part in some more serious competitions where the type of rest, rifle and pellet are to a certain specification whilst shooting at an exact distance. We have some in-house competitions and also enter postal competitions against other clubs around the country.
You will see a great number of different rifles used at M.T.S.C. Some people will use a .22 rim fire rifle on benchrest whilst the majority of members use a plethora of air rifles. Anything from one shot springers through (P.C.P.) pre charged pneumatic multi shot rifles (both up to 12ft/lb in power) to those that are over 12ft/lb which need a firearms licence to own and use.
There is no right or wrong rifle to purchase but there are a few types we'd advise against purchasing. We'd encourage new comers to come down and have a chat and perhaps a look at some of the different rifles in use. There's always someone here that can offer advice and let you know the best place to purchase equipment. With telescopic scopes it might also be best to come and have a look before grabbing something that seemed like a bargain off the internet.
We do have a small number of club rifles that new comers can use so you can get a feel and have a go before the expense of purchasing your own rifle and equipment. A typical shopping list to bear in mind when budgeting for your own set up might include - the rifle, scope and mounts, ammunition, a case/slip (to keep it all in) and a rest or shooting bag. We provide basic facilities such as benches, chairs and for a small charge - air to refill one's P.C.P. rifle and of course paper targets.
We are a friendly varied bunch so feel free to pop along during the week (check opening times) for a casual introduction to the club and what we have to offer.
